Volcanoes North Island, New Zealand 2006.

There are 3 volcanoes in this area of New Zealand, namely Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu. Sunset Tongariro, New Zealand. They provided the backdrop for 'Lord of the Rings' where Frodo cast the ring into 'Mt Doom'.
Tongariro has blasted 4 craters across a wide undulating summit, and is not a classically shaped 'cone' as opposed to Ngauruhoe, which is a perfect steep cone shape ideal for Hobbits to scale.
Mt Ruapehu is much higher than the other 2, and is a little further South. It is covered in snow for much of the year and is very popular with North Island skiers. It is the most active and erupted as recently as 1996.
